Established in 2001, the .NAME generic Top-Level Domain is the only one planned for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to obtain john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Existing third-level domain names remained active.
